Lamp Parts
The structure of most incandescent lamps is very simple and consists of a switch, plug, socket and a cord. These are similar to the parts of any other electrical appliance and they are also subject to failure. But some simple steps can be followed in order to prevent these parts from failing.
Regular cleaning – The various parts of the lamp, the bulb and every other piece of lighting in the house should be cleaned at least three times in a year so that all the dust and dirt can be removed from the lamp. The presence of dust and dirt in the lamp will make the lighting work with more energy being consumed and its efficiency also reduces. Warm water, which also contains soap, should be used to clear the lamps and then they should be rinsed. A slightly wet cloth should be used to clean the bulbs as well as the other components. But make sure that the plug has been disconnected before the cleaning process begins.
Minimum wattage – Use a bulb that has minimum wattage whenever possible. Certain portions of the room or the house do not require very powerful lighting and bulbs having smaller wattage can be used in these places. The light that is emitted from a 100 watt bulb is the same as the light from two 60 watt bulbs but the amount of energy consumed is also less.
Timer – You can make use of a timer, which will automatically switch on the lights during the twilight hour and switch them off in the morning. This will help in saving a lot of money on electricity and it will prevent the lights from staying on all day. There are many kinds of timers, which are available in the market, and you have a lot of options to choose from.
Motion sensors – Lights, which have been installed for security purposes, should also have motion sensors attached to them. When anything that comes within this beam of activity, the lights will start. This helps to conserve some of the energy used by the lamp and the lamps last for a much longer period of time since they are not being used too much.
Fluorescent lights – These lights have a lifetime that is twenty times more than that of an incandescent bulb and the amount of light provided by them is also the same. The amount of energy spent by them is less and the parts here do not have to be replaced very often. It is better to replace all the incandescent bulbs in the house with fluorescent bulbs. Some people have fluorescent bulbs, which are an old model. The latest ones can replace these. They do not use that much energy though they cost a little more.
Dimmers – Adding a dimmer to a light is always a good idea. This helps in increasing the lifetime of the bulb of the lamp as well as the parts of the bulb and it also helps in saving energy. You can use a dimmer in order to dim the lights when you want a romantic atmosphere.
Night-lights – Night-lights help in saving a lot of energy for the main light points in your house. They also help in increasing the lifetime of your other lighting fixtures. They can be installed in any room and since they are sensitive to light, they get switched off automatically.
Fluorescent adaptor bulbs – Adaptor bulbs can be used to convert your incandescent bulbs to fluorescent bulbs. This will prevent the bulbs from failing or breaking down.
Precaution – Instead of waiting till the last minute for your lamp to fail, it is better to check all parts of the lamp at least two times in a year. The Plug should be checked for being overheated or for burn signs. Make sure that there are no nicks or a cut in the cord and that it is not wearing out. The socket and switch should also be checked properly and any parts that need to be replaced should be done immediately.
Turn off – Many people used to say that it is better to leave a lamp switched on than to keep switching it on and turning it off again and again. But this is a false notion that many people have. A lot of energy is wasted when a light is left on and the life of the lamp gets reduced automatically and the parts of the lamp also get spoiled.
