Different Types of Lamps

Try to think of a home in your mind, which does not have any lamps of nay kind – be it fluorescent lamps, study lamps or even ceiling lamps. Lamps and bulbs have become such a compulsory component of our everyday life that we find it difficult to even think of a life without them. The word ‘Lamp’ has been derived from the Greek word ‘Lampas’ which means a torch, lamp or a beacon. Any instrument, which helps in generating light for any period of time, is known as a lamp. In today’s world, lamps are also known as a part of a luminaire, which can be replaced easily. This is an instrument, which helps in converting electric energy to electromagnetic energy in both visible as well as invisible forms.

The first form of light that was invented by man was fire. Once he invented fire, he wanted to use it in his cave so that it would light up his cave and also give him some warmth during the cold weather. So he took a burning log of wood from the fire inside his cave and created the first torch or the first lamp. But once the lamp had been created, he had to find a solution as to how to make the light from the lamp last for a longer period of time. As time went by, he started finding ways of making the light from the lamp burn for a longer period of time. Items like beeswax and olive oil were used for this purpose.

Later on, homes and streets were lit using much more complicated methods. During the latter half of the 19th century, oil lamps were used all over England to light up the streets. The hard work and unfailing efforts of Thomas Edison bore fruit after this. He introduced the incandescent lamp to the world, which was a revolution in the field of light. The festival of lights is celebrated all over the world today. Many buildings have lights on them and so do streets. Cars and homes have separate lights made for their own purpose. Due to the advent of technology, the light generated from lamps is much brighter and it also lasts for a longer time period.

Oil Lamps – These lamps were used in the old days and they used oil or wax to create light. They are now used to change the ambience in a room and they can also be used when the electricity supply has failed.

Incandescent Lamps – These lamps are being used all over the world for lighting. The light coming from these lamps is very bright and it stands somewhere between candlelight and sunlight. Halogen lamps are also incandescent lamps and their light can also be compared with sunlight.

Fluorescent Lamps – The light generated from fluorescent is very cool compared to the hot light that comes from incandescent lamps. They can be installed easily and they do not consume too much energy and they also do not generate too much of heat. These lamps are becoming very popular specially because they last much longer when compared to incandescent lamps.

HID Lamps – These are very powerful lamps, which create a light that is of very high intensity. They were initially used only as streetlights since they did not consume a lot of energy. They converted energy into light at an 8:10 ratio.

LED Lamps – This is the latest technology in the field of lamps and this helps in generating a lot of light and does not consume a lot of electricity and also does not give out a lot of heat. But they are also very expensive. They are still being used as display lights and they also last for a long period of time.
